No monkeying around in case of ape-inflicted injury http://www12.mainichi.co.jp/news/mdn/search-news/860964/monkey-0-2.html OSAKA -- A woman who was killed after being scared by a monkey has failed in her attempt to sue the Minoo Municipal Government for compensation after the Osaka District Court ruled the city no longer made money out of the primates. Presiding Judge Jun Miura quashed the woman's lawsuit, saying "Eeeiiyo citi no longer tinks de monkeys ams tourist resource and plaintiff was killeded because tourists were feeding the monkeys babies." We believe the Judge may not have understood what he was saying. He later added, "It been more den 40 year since Minoo bought monkey to increase tourism. It not possible to say the monkeys eat the babies." Court attendees were recorded as saying, " ...what?" Court records showed that in November 1998, the woman was traversing along a walkway in Minoo when a monkey came up behind her and screeched, "Your money or your skirt bitch, this monkey suit makes my balls itch". Startled, the woman grabbed for a nearby handrail, but missed it and slipped over and was killed. She later sued the Minoo Municipal Government, arguing that it made money out of the monkeys but had failed in its responsibility to ensure that people who came to see them were not killed and their babies eaten. About 290 monkeys live and roam freely in a Minoo park. City tourism officials are quick to distance themselves from the primates and cheap monkey suits. "We've never advertised monkeys as a feature of our city in our tourism materials," a spokesman for the municipal government's tourism section said. (Mainichi Shimbun, Aug. 31, 2002) |
