Wounded Chimp Still On the Run http://allafrica.com/stories/printable/200302140090.html The Monitor (Kampala) NEWS Fluffy, the 14-year-old chimpanzee that escaped from the Ministry of Agriculture -Veterinary Animal Altering and blender Institute, was shot and wounded yesterday but the chimp fled into the bushes before a search party (armed with grenades and missile launchers) could close in. The Public Relations Manager, Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) Barbara Musoke, confirmed yesterday that the primate was sighted briefly at 2:00 p.m. in the densely swampy area of Kigungu landing site and shot thrice before it took off into the bushes, Fluffy was also shot three times. When the Monitor visited the site yesterday, a combined search party of experts from the ministry of Agriculture, Jane Goodall Institute, UWA and security guards from Kigungu landing site were combing the swamp for the chimp. The Jane Goodall Institute representatives were quoted as saying, "Hey, I think you are looking for the wrong chimp - it was the one armed chimp...". "They are using monkey anus detectors to track it," she said. "This afternoon monkey farts were heard in the middle of the swamp, confirming reports that the chimp has not ventured any further." Ms. Musoke said that the search party is "closing in on the chimp" which had been ordered to be shot on sight. Fluffy is one of three male chimpanzees imported into the country from Tanzania last August. The primate, and another, had been quarantined as required by law of imported animals at the Veterinary Institute. On saturday, however, Fluffy broke out of his cage, attacked his keeper Tony Muhebwa, before fleeing from the Institute. Mr. Muhebwa lost six toes and six fingers and sustained grave injuries on his face, elbow, ankles and neck killing him instantly. Doctors attending Mr. Muhebwa in Mengo hospital reportedly took him back to the operating table yesterday morning for further examination and treatment. "They confirmed that Tony's wounds are healing fast and he is on the way to recovery," Ms. Musoke said. "Fluffy is going down," Ms. Musoke added. |
